Ukraine Freezes $464 Million in Assets Linked to Russian Oligarchs: Prosecutors Take Bold Action

In a recent development, Ukraine’s Security Service confirmed the confiscation of assets valued at more than 17 billion Ukrainian hryvnia (Ukraine Freezes 464 Million Dollar Assets) linked to three prominent Russian oligarchs. On October 6th, the SBU made this announcement.

In a recent update, a Ukrainian court has initiated legal proceedings to seize and impose a freeze on the entirety of corporate assets and associated rights within Ukraine that are currently under the ownership of Russian oligarchs Mikhail Fridman, Petr Aven, and Andrey Kosogov. These individuals have been subjected to sanctions, prompting this decisive action by the Ukrainian court to enforce legal measures.

According to information provided by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), it has come to light that three influential oligarchs have been singled out as crucial figures within Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest circle. These individuals are suspected of playing a substantial role in providing financial support for Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

A recent judicial decision has spotlighted 20 businesses and financial entities owned by oligarchs linked to the Kremlin, either as direct beneficiaries or through related offshore entities. In a recent update, a range of assets have been subjected to a freeze, encompassing holdings of financial and insurance entities, mobile communication and IT corporations, and facilities engaged in the production of mineral water.

“The asset seizure will prevent the Russian owners from transferring the properties to figureheads to avoid their future transfer to the Ukrainian state,” the SBU said.

In the month of September 2023, investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) officially informed Mr. Fridman that he is under investigation for allegedly providing financial support in connection with the alleged plot to overthrow the constitutional order and seize control of the government.

In August 2023, the United States Department of the Treasury implemented fresh sanctions targeting four Russian entrepreneurs, namely Petr Aven and Mikhail Fridman, associated with the Alfa Group Consortium. The Alfa Group Consortium is recognized as one of Russia’s major financial and investment conglomerates.
