Navalny’s Lawyer, Vasily Dubkov, Arrested Following Assistance in Retrieving Putin Critic’s Body
Vasily Dubkov’s detention, citing “violating public order,” was first reported by the independent Russian news site Novaya Gazeta Europe.
Vasily Dubkov assumed a crucial role in the efforts to secure the release of Alexei Navalny’s body from Russian authorities. Navalny’s demise occurred on February 16 within the Siberian prison colony IK-3, following his sudden illness during a walk.

Following Navalny’s passing, Vasily Dubkov accompanied Lyudmila Navalnaya to Salekhard, the administrative center of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in Russia. This journey took place after Navalny’s death on February 16 in a nearby prison colony.
Leading up to the eventual handover of her son’s remains on February 24, Dubkov, alongside other legal representatives of Navalny, supported Navalnaya in her endeavors to secure his release.
As per reports from the news site Novaya Gazeta Europa, Dubkov was detained in Moscow on administrative charges linked to disorderly conduct.
According to the Sota media site, Vasily Dubkov has been taken to the Schcherbinksky district police station in Moscow.
In October 2023, three of Navalny’s attorneys were imprisoned under allegations that their clients’ organizations were deemed “extremist” and outlawed. Subsequently, two additional Navalny attorneys have reportedly departed Russia, as per The Daily Mail.
Alexei Navalny, who was serving a contested 19-year sentence for alleged extremism — charges widely viewed as politically motivated and unjust — passed away on February 16 in an Arctic prison colony. Following his voluntary return to Moscow in January 2021, subsequent to his recovery in Germany from nerve agent poisoning that he attributed to the Kremlin, Navalny faced imprisonment. He was subsequently handed three prison terms for offenses he vehemently denied having political motivations for.
