Russia Faces Significant Military Personnel Loss; Deadly Missile Strike in Donetsk

HERE IS THE SITUATION ON SATURDAY 7 JAN 29, 2024. (683 DAY)

The Russian military faces a significant setback, with projections indicating a potential loss of 500,000 personnel within the next year, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defence. The Ministry highlighted the rising daily casualties in Ukraine, emphasizing that if the current trend persists, Russia could experience a substantial reduction in its military force.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence also noted Russia’s ongoing challenges in establishing air superiority over Ukraine. Recent incidents, such as the downing of three Russian combat jets just before Christmas, have impacted the tactical objectives of ground forces. Despite an increase in aerial strikes by Russia in recent days, the levels remain lower than before the shootdowns.

In a tragic incident, a Russian missile strike resulted in the death of 11 people and injuries to 10 in and around the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk. Notably, five of the victims were children. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack in his nightly video address, emphasizing that it targeted ordinary, private homes.

Denmark’s plan to transfer 19 American-made F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, contingent on the completion of training for Ukrainian pilots. The Danish defence ministry clarified that the donation aims to support Ukrainian personnel operating the planes.

Meanwhile, Polish farmers have suspended their blockade of a major crossing into Ukraine after reaching an agreement with the Polish government. However, truckers continue to blockade three other main border crossings, protesting against perceived unfair competition from Ukrainian counterparts and opposing the relaxation of access rules to the European Union for Ukrainian firms.

In a noteworthy development, the Kharkiv region prosecutor’s office has presented evidence of Russian attacks using missiles supplied by North Korea. Fragments showcased by the office further support the claim that Russia utilized North Korean-supplied missiles during its invasion of Ukraine.
