Alexei Navalny’s mother has been given an ultimatum to secure son’s body

According to Mr. Navalny’s spokeswoman, Alexei Navalny’s mother has been given an ultimatum to consent to a clandestine burial for the deceased opposition figure within a three-hour timeframe. Failure to comply would result in his interment at the Arctic Circle penal colony where he passed away a week ago.

Reportedly, Mr. Navalny’s mother was coerced into signing a death certificate affirming that he died of natural causes. Conversely, Mr. Navalny’s widow, Yulia, contends that he was assassinated at the behest of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin refutes these accusations, characterizing Western reactions to the death as “hysterical.”

Mr. Navalny’s demise occurred on February 16, purportedly following an “incident” during a “stroll,” as asserted by prison authorities. His associates have offered a €20,000 reward to security personnel willing to provide information regarding the circumstances of his death.

Amidst these developments, US President Joe Biden convened with Mr. Navalny’s widow and daughter in San Francisco on Thursday. The White House affirmed Biden’s appreciation for Navalny’s valor and his advocacy for a corruption-free and democratic Russia.

In the absence of Navalny’s wife and team, his mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, has taken it upon herself to secure her son’s body from Russian authorities and arrange a funeral. However, she has encountered significant resistance since his passing was announced a week ago. Navalny’s supporters allege that the Kremlin is obstructing the funeral proceedings out of fear that it would attract large crowds.

Navalnaya has revealed that investigators went as far as threatening to allow her son’s body to decompose unless she acquiesced to their demand for a secret burial. In a video shared on her son’s YouTube channel on Thursday, Navalnaya recounted the intimidation she faced, with officials in Salekhard, the Siberian town where Navalny’s body is housed, pressuring her to agree to the clandestine burial. She disclosed that she had seen her son’s body on Wednesday and had been coerced into signing his medical death certificate, which attributed his demise to natural causes.
