In a joint press release on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, Dmitry and Elena Rybolovleva said they had “agreed on the terms of their divorce,” which meant that all legal processes were over. A Rybolovlev representative acknowledged that the financial settlement’s amount was kept a secret. By virtue of his $8.5 billion worth, Rybolovlev is the 165th most wealthy person in the world, as per our most recent list of billionaires. In Russia, he is the fourteenth richest.

Following a contentious and widely reported divorce that started in 2008, a Swiss court granted Elena a $4.5 billion settlement in May 2014. She accused her spouse of moving assets to foreign trusts to put them out of her reach after they split up that year. Among the properties were the Greek islands of Sparti and Scorpios, which were formerly owned by Athina Onassis, and a record-breaking $88 million penthouse on Central Park’s West in New York, which was purchased from her in 2013 for an estimated $150 million. Additionally, a $95 million estate in Palm Beach was purchased from Donald Trump.

Litigation quickly turned acrimonious. During a New Year’s Eve party in 2008, Rybolovlev was served with Elena’s divorce lawsuit, reportedly due to his bankers alerting him about an asset freeze. Tired of his infidelity, he attended lavish yacht parties where he “pursued new conquests with his friends and fellow oligarchs,” as stated in court documents. Elena was estranged from her children during the legal battle, which eventually resulted in a Geneva court awarding her a staggering $4.5 billion in 2014, rejecting billion-dollar settlement offers.

However, there was more to come. In June, a Swiss appeals court reduced the amount to 565 million Swiss francs, approximately $600 million. This was seen as a significant victory for Rybolovlev, leaving Elena with one last option: appealing to the Swiss Supreme Court. One thing that remains certain after the conclusion of the case by both parties is that there is more than enough money for everyone.

The settlement reached by Rybolovlev can be considered his second major win in a recent, contentious divorce. In April, Natalia, the ex-wife of Vladimir Potanin, filed a lawsuit in Moscow, claiming half of his assets, which were valued at over $7 billion at the time. She was dismayed when Potanin offered $250,000 per month in alimony and properties in Moscow, London, and New York after a 30-year marriage that had produced three children. In a verdict in September that dismissed his ex-wife’s claims, Moscow’s Presnenskiy court supported Potanin, who is the CEO of the holding firm Interros and the nickel giant Norilsk.

Rybolovlev’s path is far from smooth sailing. The oligarch, who also owns the prestigious soccer team AS Monaco, filed a lawsuit against art dealer and Freeport owner Yves Bouvier earlier this year, alleging fraud in art transactions exceeding $2 billion. Bouvier, renowned as the “King of Freeports,” is the owner of Natural Le Coultre, which includes a state-of-the-art storage facility spanning 22,000 square meters in Geneva. While Rybolovlev initially secured favorable judgments against Bouvier in Monaco, Paris, and Singapore, the protracted legal battle is expected to endure. Furthermore, Bouvier has hinted at potential retaliation, potentially revealing more private information.

Nonetheless, Rybolovlev can find some relief in having resolved at least one of his legal entanglements.
