In a letter to congressional leaders issued on Monday, the administration emphasized the critical need for Congress to swiftly approve tens of billions of dollars in military and economic assistance. Without this support, Kyiv’s ability to defend itself from Russia may face a serious setback.

President Joe Biden’s budget director, Shalanda Young, conveyed a direct message in a letter to Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, emphasizing the severe consequences if military assistance to Ukraine diminishes. Young stated that cutting off the supply of US weapons and equipment would “kneecap” Kyiv’s fight against the Russian invasion. This, she warned, not only jeopardizes the gains Ukraine has achieved but also heightens the risk of Russian military victories on the battlefield.

In response, Speaker Johnson criticized the Biden administration for not adequately addressing his party’s concerns about the lack of a clear strategy in Ukraine. Additionally, he reiterated the Republicans’ position, linking any aid to Ukraine with changes in US policy regarding the southern border with Mexico. This insistence stems from rising concerns about the increasing number of migrant arrivals.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has insisted that the upcoming EU leaders’ summit refrain from making any decisions regarding Ukraine’s pursuit of approval for membership talks. While the European Commission has recommended approval once final conditions are met, unanimous agreement from the leaders is necessary.

In another development, a Russian general lost his life while deployed in Ukraine, as reported by the governor of Russia’s Voronezh region. Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps of the Northern Fleet, died in the line of duty within a special operation zone during the 21-month offensive.

Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Viktoria Kireyeva, highlighted the environmental toll of Russia’s invasion. Experts estimate that the conflict, initiated in February of the previous year, has resulted in approximately 150 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Kireyeva underscored the devastating impact on the environment, with air, soil, and water pollution as a direct consequence of the ongoing hostilities. This information was shared at a conference on the sidelines of the Cop28 climate conference in Dubai.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed regret over the deteriorating ties with western countries while accepting the credentials of two dozen new ambassadors at the Kremlin. In addressing the envoys, Putin acknowledged the challenging times and reminisced about the historical ability of Russia and the UK to build relations in the post-World War II era. He expressed hope for a positive change in the current situation for the benefit of both countries and their nations.

The country’s reconstruction ministry shared the news on Telegram, revealing that 200 vessels were involved in exporting the cargo, including almost 5 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products.

Poland has called on the EU to reinstate permits limiting transit for Ukrainian truckers, according to Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. This call comes as Polish and Slovakian truckers blocked several border crossings to Ukraine since November 6. The demand for reinstating a permit system is aimed at both Ukrainian companies operating in the EU and European truckers entering Ukraine.
