Zaporizhzhia Positions Captured by Russia Despite Ukrainian ISW Counteroffensive Defense

In Zaporizhzhia’s western region, recent gains by Russian occupiers reclaim positions seized by Ukrainian troops during the 2023 summer counteroffensive, as reported by the Institute for the Study of War.

It is reported that the Russian Federation took control of this area, most likely as a result of the Ukrainian defenders moving to more fortified locations close to Robotyny for the winter.

“Geolocation images published on December 14 and 27 show that Russian troops have recently advanced west of Verbovoy (9 km east of Robotynoy),” said the report.

According to ISW, Ukraine’s August 2023 capture of adjacent positions was strategically important because it might enable Ukrainian forces to start operating past the thickest Russian defense layers and minefields. However, according to analysts, these positions are especially crucial for Russian forces.

“Recent Russian successes in the western Zaporizhia region confirm ISW’s assessment that the current war of position in Ukraine is not a stable stalemate, as the current balance can swing either way due to decisions made in the West or Russia, and Russia’s limited gains may become significant, especially if the West stops military aid to Ukraine,” the analysts stated.
