Ukraine Investigates: Prosecutors in Ukraine announced on Tuesday that they had opened an investigation into a strange explosion that occurred at a birthday celebration and killed an aide to the country’s top military leader. The authorities characterized it as a tragic accident.
According to the Central Region of Ukraine Investigates special defense prosecutor’s office, Major Gennadiy Chastyakov, an assistant, returned home to his suburban Kyiv residence on Monday bearing birthday gifts from his colleagues, one of which was a box holding six explosives. The major’s son subsequently discovered one of these explosives, according to the prosecutor’s office.

The officer said in a statement that he accidentally set off the explosion by tugging on the ring when he took the grenade from the youngster.
According to the prosecution, the explosion instantly killed Major Chastyakov, the chief of staff of the Ukrainian military under Gen. Valery Zaluzhny. His 13-year-old son suffered serious injuries from the explosion, while his 11-year-old daughter only suffered minor wounds. According to Ms. Maryana Reva, the serviceman who gave Major Chastyakov the grenades “explicitly mentioned” that they were of military quality.
“Unfortunately, the deceased didn’t take it seriously,” Ms. Maryana Reva said.
The authorities refrained from disclosing the serviceman’s identity. However, Ukrainian police revealed on Tuesday afternoon that they had transferred the case to the State Bureau of Investigation, responsible for probing offenses related to senior officials, implying that the individual in question is likely an officer.
