The Investigation Concludes Sergey Protosenya killed his Wife and Daughter

The Blanes court’s conclusion that the April 2022 killing of the Protosenya family in Lloret de Mar was a double murder-suicide . Sergey after killing his wife and daughter, later committed suicide by hanging himself on an outside porch of the mansion with a new rope.

The court’s conclusion is based on the evidence that was gathered during the investigation, including the fact that there were no signs of forced entry into the home and that the murder weapon was found in Sergey Protosenya’s possession.

Key clues to determine that Sergey was the main culprit of all the deaths

  • The rope with which he was found hanging was purchased by Sergey himself at a Chinese bazaar in Lloret.
  • Sergey’s computers and cellphones showed that he had researched how to kill with a kitchen knife, how to kill with a hammer, and how to tie a knot to hang yourself.
  • Blood traces found in the house support the theory that Sergey first killed his daughter by stabbing her in the head with an axe and then stabbing her in the neck. He repeated the operation with his wife, went to wash in the toilet, and finally hanged himself with the rope he had prepared.
  • Sergey Protosenya’s son survived the massacre because he was in Bordeaux on the day of the crime.
  • The son stated that in the days before the crime, he noticed that his father was acting strangely and was very distressed.
  • He mentioned this to his mother, who told him that his father had been in a personal crisis for a week due to the war in Ukraine and the seizure of assets of other Russian oligarchs living abroad.
  • Files found on Sergey Protosenya’s computer:
  • Instructions on how to save properties in Cyprus
  • Instructions on how to manage his bank assets
  • Instructions on how to claim back a million-euro loan he had extended to a friend

The court has concluded that the killing of the Protosenya family was a domestic crime. However, the court also found that the war in Ukraine, which had started two months earlier, played a role in the killings. It is possible that the war caused Sergey’s stress and anxiety, which may have contributed to his decision to kill his wife and daughter.

Was the Death of Sergey Protosenya and His Family a Murder-Suicide?

Sergey Protosenya was a well-educated and experienced businessman. He was an engineer and economist at the Kuibyshev School in Moscow, which is now known as the Samara State University of Economics. After graduating, he worked as the chief financial officer of oil company Novatek-Tarkosaleneftegaz and the chief accountant of Novatek, one of Russia’s largest natural gas producers.

The statement from Novatek, a major Russian natural gas producer, that the idea that its former employee Sergey Protosenya could be responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter bears “no relation to reality” is a bold one. It comes at a time when there is still much speculation about the circumstances surrounding the deaths, and when the police investigation is still ongoing.
